About Trail Tracker
Simply, Trail Tracker is both a user-generated trail guide and an
interactive tool geared toward improving the planning and sharing of
off-road excursions. Drivers can create visual interactive trips by
uploading GPS data and photos.
Searching Trails
Click on "Search" button. Search one of three ways:
1) Search in search field. In the search field, type in one of
the following: trail location or name of driver who uploaded the trip
or keyword. Click "Search." A list then appears.
2) Search using map. You can search trails by state by clicking
on the appropriate state on the map of the U.S.A.
3) Browse. After searching by state, you can filter your search
by city. On the left-hand side of the screen, a state search will
yield a list of cities in that state and the number of trails
currently uploaded from that city on Trail Tracker.

What is GPS?
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system developed by the
United States Department of Defense and managed by the United States Air Force. It can be used by anyone and is often used by civilians for
navigation purposes. It uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, which allow GPS
receivers to determine their current location, the time, and velocity.
GPS devices can pinpoint exactly where they are once they pick up
signals of at least four satellites at the same time. Since it became
fully operational in 1993, GPS has become a widely used aid to
navigation worldwide.
Recent innovations in GPS technology have made the system increasingly
precise and reliable. Especially the WAAS system. WAAS is a system of
satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections,
giving you even better position accuracy. GPS devices equipped with
the WAAS system are now accurate within six feet/two meters.
What GPS devices do you recommend?
Any unit by one of the popular manufacturers (Garmin and Magellan work well). One
important feature to look for is WAAS, which increases accuracy of the unit.
